Sarawak Energy Launches NEM Subsidy to Boost Rooftop Solar Adoption in Sarawak and Kuching Homes
In support of Sarawak’s renewable energy goals, Sarawak Energy, widely regarded as one of the best solar companies in Sarawak, is rolling out a new Net Energy Metering (NEM) subsidy scheme for Domestic Tariff customers. This initiative is designed to make residential solar installation in Kuching and across Sarawak more affordable by reducing upfront costs, enabling long-term energy savings, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Under the NEM program, homeowners in Sarawak can install Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems to generate electricity for their own use and export excess energy back to the grid. Exported electricity is credited to their monthly bills, reducing costs while helping to lower Malaysia’s overall carbon footprint. The programm also aligns with the Sarawak Government’s Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), which promotes increased adoption of renewable energy and supports decarbonization for sustainable economic growth.
Solar Subsidy Amounts for Domestic Customers
The Sarawak Energy solar subsidy is available to eligible homeowners on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on quota availability. Subsidy amounts are based on the size of the solar system installed:
RM 12,000 for systems above 6kWac to 50kWac
RM 10,000 for systems above 3.5kWac to 6kWac
RM 8,000 for systems ranging from 2kWac to 3.5kWac
To qualify, installations must be carried out by certified Solar PV Designers registered with the Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak. Applications must be submitted through Sarawak Energy customer service counters on behalf of the homeowners.
This subsidy applies to successful NEM installations starting in 2026, specifically for landed residential properties under the Domestic Tariff category. Each account owner is limited to one subsidized installation, and the scheme does not cover homes with existing solar PV systems.
However, homeowners who sign NEM contracts in 2025 may still be eligible to submit claims through SESCO. If approved, subsidies will be paid starting January 2026.
Learn More at the MPSEA Solar Roadshow in Kuching
To raise public awareness, Sarawak Energy will be participating in the Malaysian Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA) Solar Roadshow on 22 September 2025 at the Sheraton Hotel, Kuching. This is a great opportunity for residents interested in solar power to learn more about the NEM subsidy, meet with certified solar experts, and explore options with the top solar installation providers in Kuching and Sarawak.
